Fearless

The last big martial arts epic that Jet Li plans to do, it's the story of another historical person from China, though this time from far more recent history. It's the early 1900s, England owns China and is trying to break her people with a tournament pitting four against China's one single champion (insert correct spelling of that champion's name here). Begins the backstory of this man, wrapping up with his realization of the true purpose behind the martial art of Wu Shu.

The action and choreography are great, the entire atmosphere complete, and the story, of course, based on actual history. The story, as seems most china-based dramas, is simultaneous heroic and sad as the main character goes from foolish but very proficient young martial artist teacher to sadder but wiser moral hero who saves the spirit of China's people in a last fight. The mnain message of the film is to get across what the true spirit of Wu Shu actually is, which is to say not revenge but honor and skill with heart.

All in all not bad, and a good film for Jet Li to go out on, though a brief note. For the most part, it's in Chinese and subtitled so consider yourself warned. Other than that, it's quite good.
