Alexander

A three-hour epic about one of History's greatest conquorers, Alxander The Great, though in truth with all the material they had available they could have done with an extra hour or so. Told as a flash-back story by one of his generals somne fourty years later, the first half of the movie seems a bit rushed. Voice-over narration interspersed by quick scenes that seem a bit too eager to be done with things to move onto the "good stuff", they could have taken a bit more time at this first half. An example would be the entire segment of Alexander made king then going round to conquer Greece and all parts along the coast between there and Egypt was summed up by a static shot of a wall map with our storyteller voicing over again. They decided the main action wad to be in Persia and later in India.

Once they got to the parts they nwere most interested in, however, they did a pretty good job. Good scenes in Persia regards conquest and revenge and a bit of intrigue, but then it's back to skipping ahead past some details again (would have loved to see in detail Alexander actually going after the generals that had betrayed his enemy, and perhaps make some fiery speech along the lines of "He may have been my sword enemy but he deserved better than this") until they slow down once hitting the Inida part of the saga. Some of this rushed approach also shows up in a few of the battle scenes, which for all their clash and blood still weren't quite up to the epic and emotional levels of that in LOTR Return Of The King. For the part of the dramatic sequences, Collin Farrel as Alexander seems to do a lot of shouting at people, sounding at times like his throat is one strained vocal chord shy of giving way. SOme of his speeches to his troops could have also been a bit more dramatic in feel (look up some old episodes of Babylon Five for some truly stirring commander-to-troops speeches

Don't get me wrong, this is still a very good movie, it's just a bit shy of the mark that could have made it a truly great epic.
