The Brothers Grimm

A new Terry Gilliam flick that's been getting some web-flack, though after actually seeing it I think these complainers don't like a movie they can't complain about. Personally, I found this film quite enjoyable and a nice dark little fairy tale. Inspired by the stories penned by the Brothers Grimm, this film supposes that perhaps they didn't start out as storytellers, or all that scrupilous. Add in the expected Grimm fairy tale references and the twist you know is coming, and you got a good little romp that both kids and adults will enjoy.

The Brothers Grimm here are con-men who free local towns from witches and curses they actually arranged themselves, at least until they are caught and forced to solve a perplexing piece of local trouble that has all the ear-marks of being a setup by other con-men just like themselves. The twist, of course, is that this time the magical forests and curse are for real. What follows is part mystery, part adventure, and part fairy tale - fairy tales as in the dark way that Grimm wrote them, not the usual cute Hollywood versions. Oh yeah, and that Terry Gilliam touch which almost reads like a typical dark Grimm Fairy tale. Come to think of it, can you think of a director that makes a better fit to handle anything Grimm?

I liked this film, no matter how picky some people want to be. Is it true this is not one of Gilliama's best? Probably. Does that make this any less enjoyable a movie? Nope, not in the least. So do yourself a favor and go see it. It makes for a great matinee'.
