Eragon

Disclaimer first: I never read the book, so this review is purely on the movie.

Based on the book written by a kid lucky enough to have parents that own their own small publishing house, at first I thought it might be a Pern ripoff, but then as the movie progressed I realized I'd seen this same plot somewhere else, a long time ago...

First off the backdrop: the world was once protected by a noble order of warriors called Jedi- I mean dragonriders, until one day one of their own betrayed them all and their betrayer became their Emperor- er king. Now fast forward and Princess Lea- I mean Princes Aryan- is running through the woods trying to get the Deathstar plans- I mean last dragon egg- safely to the secret rebel base. Darth- I mean the king's shade-wizard catches her and she is forced to secret the plans in her faithfu;l droid- I mean, treleport the egg away to someplace else; Darth-shade-wizard meanwhile captures her and takes her away to his deathstar- I mean base. Said plans- er egg- ends up in the hands of one Luke Sky- I mean Aragorn- I mean Eragon. The egg hatches and Eragon finds himself chosen as a future Jedi Knight- I mean dragonrider. Hooking up with him is an old man who turns out to be the last Jedi Master- I mean dragon rider (currently without his Force- er dragon) who takes the youth under his wing (as it were) to train him in the ways of... well anyway, Eragon finds out the Princess is being held prisoner and so engineers a rescue to get her out of the Death St- I mean stronghold. It is during this rescue that Obi Won- I mean the dragon rider guy is wonded, and soon to die to make sure that Luke/Aragorn/Eragon make it to the rebels.

Once in the secret rebel base, the rebels examine the death star plans- I mean dragon, just in time to see that the villains had followed the rider to the base. The invasion proceeds with the Death Star and assorted forces- I mean the shade-wizard and Emperor/King's armies along for the ride. All is saved when Luke- I mean Eragon destroys the DeathstarStar as it's shooting up the place- I mean, kills the wizard as he's shooting up the place. Luke/Eragon becomes a rider/Jedi with the rebels, the Princess goes off to gather her people up, and the King/Emporer/Darth Sidious readies his own dragon for the future. Roll credits.

Of course it could be me, but it does seem as if 90% of this movie is Star Wars with dragons. Aside from that, though, the movie seems like it's rushed too much, and at just an hour and fourty-five minutes it is a bit quick for such a supposed epic. Jeremy Irons plays the old dragon rider, and it now occurs to me that he was the whispery villain in a far worse dragon film by the name of Dungeons and Dragons; seems as he's hard up for work.

All in all, this is pretty much a B-movie that fits well on my Cheesey Scale, and with that I award it a Provalone. If it's any consolation, I hear this film bears little resemblance to the book.
