Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within

I've never played the computer game but I know what I like and this is it. A computer animation that ttries to imitate real life, and in so doing permits visual effects that would either take a constant barrage of special effects in a live action movie or look unconvincing and a bit cartoonish in a normal animated feature. As for how true to life the computer generated people look, well there's still room for improvement but it's definitely much better than previous attempts (Phantom Menace excepted)- just check out the heroine's hair or detailed facial features.

As for the story it's something else. A nice clash of science fiction and fantasy with an alien invasion unique from anything previous. Between the animation and sound, the phantom aliens hit you in the face with a hard reality that continues to drive the movie. This movie is true it's own reality even down to an ending I'd have only expected out of a piece of Japanese Anime (which makes sense, considering the names in the closing credits). The story is paced so you can discover the phantoms' secret along with the main character- instead of too soon or too late.

Iyt's a fantasy, it's an adventure, it's a bit of a mystery, it's for teens, family, or hard-core science fiction of anime fans. In other words, it's a movie you should definitely see.
