The Forbidden Kingdom

A good old fashoned chinese mythology epic, thisa time with Jackie Chan as part of an ensamble cast and not just his typical fun goof-off movie of the last several years. Jackie Chan, Jet Li, and the best of movie-world Kung Fu people. Based on a combination of Chinese myths and graphic novels, it strats with a guy from presemnt-day (naturally... sigh) being transported back to ancient China where gods and immortals walk the Earth, and the land is ruled over by the evil Jade Warlord. Overall, a very fun and exciting movie.

What's good? Nearly everything. Some of the best Kung Fu fight sequences in a very long time, immortals and witches with magical skills, a quest to restore the Monlkey King so he can have his final battle against the Jade Warlord, Jackie Chan doing his trademarked drunken-fist thing, Jet Li dong hid thing alongside and against Jackie Chan, a White itch with animated hair, a lovely assassin, and well you get the idea.

What's not so good? Well, that very last ending I saw coming from about the first reel, and why have the old m"guy from modern day going to other sytsrange world" bit to beging with? It could have been done just as well with a hapless vilklager of the day. That ending? Watch A Conneticut Yankee in King Author's Court (from the Bing Crosby version all the way up to Martin Lawrence's Black Knight version) and you'll see the bit with his girlfriend about to be reborn when he gets back to his own time coming from the word Go. Also the part with once he's back in his own time his experiences have taught him enough to take on his own modern-day bullies? Been done in Never Ending Story III (or II, but I think III), and possibly a couple other films.

Still though, all very well done and most enjoyable. Nitpicking aside, this is a pretty spectacular and fun epic. Go see it now.
