Inspector Gadget

First, let me say that the sound editor for this film ought to be shot, hung, and forced to listen to the volume of his own efforts. You know how a film's background music is supposed to be in the background? Well, in this one the sound track was waaaaaaaaayyy too loud. To the point of drowning out half of what the character Doctor Claw was saying. A full third of the conversation in the film went completely unheard because the soundtrack drowned it all out. It really spoiled my enjoyment of the film.

That said, it seems like they did try to do a faithful embelishment on the original cartoon, including dubbing in a few strains of the original theme song. Mathew Broderick did a rather subdued version of the Inspector, though he managed the state of confusion rather well. The movie was full of gadgets and effects that kids under 10 will like, but the film as a whole lacked a certain flamboyance- I guess they tried to make up for that by turning up the volume on the soundtrack. The best moments came at the end of the film, but as a whole the first half was a chore to watch because of the unbalanced sound problem.

All in all, I'd say this is a wait until it comes out on video and rent it for a dollar movie; especially rising movie prices being what they are. Between this and Godzilla I think Broderick should start to choose his roles more carefully. He's capable of so much more.

By the way, that IS Don Adam's (the original voice of Inspector Gadget) voice you hear as Brain there at the end.
