How The Grinch Stole Christmas

This settles it; Jim Carrey must be a living cartoon!

In a living adaption that is 90% faithful to both the book and old animated version, this film pops out like the cartoon exploded onto the soundstage fully three-dimensional. Every last little Who-vian gizmo and character are here, with the Grinch the best of them all. Carrey does a supperlative job of bringing the old sourpus to life, complete with the most upward-curling evil Grinch smile this side of any cartoon. We even have the old voice-over narrative with every last who-line perfectly intact. Heck, they even threw in the most famous Who-song of them all, with every last line just as I remember from my childhood (altogether now: You're a mean one, mister Grinch...).

The changes from the original amount to one addition and one little sniggling detail. The addition is that of a back-story givingus a Grinch history that blends perfectly into Seuss' original, with the role of Cindy Lou Who expanded into a perfect secondary character. The little detail is that in the original the Grinch also hauled away the big tree along with everything else, then brought it back when he saw the Whos dancing around an empty lot. I suppose packing that tree onto the already-bloated sleigh would have been a bit too much for Logistics; doesn't spoil the plot any but I just thought I'd mention it (and to sshow how good a memory I have :) ).

To call this a family film would be a diservice; everyone will enjoy it! Just a note to the parents out there: I don't know where they got that PG rating from, but trust me; in earlier years this would have been a straight G rating. Maybe it was a Grinch who set the rating.
