First off, The Hauntingis no more a horror flick than the Mummy is; if you want a good fright then go elsewhere. In fact, they haven't really made a good fright since Alien or Poltergeist.

That said, Haunting is a good film in that I found to have an interesting mystery woven about the special effects. There's sympathy for the ghost children, and secrets to be found out about the nfamous Hill House. The plot is fairly simple, and several parts can be easily seen coming, but I still found it quite enjoyable. Sort of an action version of the original horror book.

See it, it's a good matinee flick that everyone can enjoy.
