Hero

First off, despite the fact that the posters say "Quentin Tarrantino Presents", this if not a Tarrantino film; it was made back in 2002 and all he did was bring it over to this country and supply the sub-titles. Second, it is in chinese, subtitled, and by the same people respoinsible for Crouching Tiger (except this time the wire-work isn't so blatantly obvious). All that said, this is actually a pretty good movie.

jet Li is a hero summoned to the King's court to explain how he killed three notorious assassin bent on killing said king, back in the time when this same King was trying to unite the original six provinces of pre-China into a single nation. The bulk of the movie is Jet Li's Nameless Hero telling his story, as with the recognition of each such killing he is permitted closer to the security-conscious King.

The fighting sequences are pure art, a martial ballet dancing across the screen, without the distractions of the superman sequences in Crouching Tiger that broke the mood with moves so out of synch with the backdrop. Something very critical to watch for in the flash-backs is the color; notice how the color of dress and light-filters change (the reason they do so will be obvious as the movie goes on). Despite the fact that it's not in English and, no matter what professed purists will say, subtitling never provides as complete a translation as actual dubbing, Hero is a good combination of action, drama, and Chinese Theater, and ends in what seems to be becoming typical Chinese-drama fashion.
