Kung Fu Hustle

Good Humor, fight sequences that read like a ballet, and what can only be described as an axe-wielding electric slide done with about fifty black-clad gangsters. The look, feel, and plot hark back to classic Shaw Brothers flicks of the 70s and 80s, done with a wink and a nod and the sense that they were having lots of fun along the way.

It's the 1940s, gangs rule the inner cities of China, including one stylized gang leader that likes doing this smooth sliding dance with his axe after he kills someone- then to be joined in by his other 100 gangsters following suit. They're fated to have a run in with a couple of fools destined for greater things, and a slum that seems amazingly filled with former kung fu masters capable of quite the range of amazing things. When everyoine comes classhing together, including a pair of interesting assassins, then the fun starts and never stops.

It doesn't even pretend to be pretentious the way Crouching Tiger Hidden Wire-Work does, it knows it's a straight fantasy just there to have fun and does a masterful job of it. Fun and drama in all the right proportions, subtitled or not fans of old classic Kung Fu flicks especially will enjoy it a lot. See it, enjoy it, buy it when the DVD comes out.
