The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen

Based on a what-if comic book series (which I've never read), this movie poses the question what oif certain fictional characters were real and all living in the same time and world. Dr Jeckyl, Tom Sawyer(grown up), Allan Quartermain, Captain Nemo, Dorian Grey, aninvisible man, and a vampire that used to work for Von Heilsing, are gathered together for a mission to stop what could be the start of a world war (the year is 1899). An interesting concept, sort of a period piece by way of Jules verne, but does it work?

I enjoyed it a bit but you have to be into alternate-universe period what-if stuff. it makes for an interestsing visual style, sort of Victorian-era Sci-Fi, and the plot and gags work within the context of the world as given. I liked Captain nemo though I'd not pictured him as Hindu (and I read the book, though in truth in the book Nemo refused to state any country of origin), but seeing the inside of his sub mirrored after the interior of a palace was great.

Not the best thing this Summer but not all that bad either. Just misses my Cheesey Scaleas long as you remember to take it all in it's own context andin that it seems to work.
