Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over

Thethirdand apparentlyfinalSpyKidsmovie, this one apparently centering around the boy as hehas to goin and rescue his imperiled sister stuck in a virtual reality game. How does it stackup to theprevious two films? well, let'sjust say that gimicks like 3-D are no replacement for a good plot.

First off, it's the old blue and red glasses form of 3-D as opposed to the more superiorpolarized glasses approach first used by Disneyland at their Captain E-O ride. Maybe Disney wouldn't let them use their's, or maybe that methodneeds special projectors, but theold dates-back-to-the-40's 3-D just gives you blurry images interspersed by gratuitous leapings out of the screen that do nothing for the plot. Avoid 3-D.

Once the 3-D gimmick is accounted for, the plot is little more then a romp through a video game wherein the sister doesn't appear until the last third and the parents (and any other interresting characters) are cameo appearances left for the last 15 minutes of the movie. I do like Sylvester Stallone as the bad guy, playing it up and even parodying himselfin the roll. I also like Ricardo Montalbaln, givinghis usual 100% in even theleastof rollshe does. Those two are the highpoints.

Okay, now for the bad. Like I said, aside from the boy and Mr. Montalbaln, all theother characters arequick cameos in the last fifteen minutes ut unfortunately that last 15 minutes is also where all the really bad is. Those last 15 minutes are just plain silly, like they had a bit more movie to make, were stuck in a hole, and just did up something really quick based on a cheap cartoon NOT from the golden age of Warner Brothers. In a weak movie to begin with that last part just drops it right through ther bottom.

The end credits have out-takes, includingonein which Sly Stallone imitates himself as somecomedians do. Then after the credits are complete you get to see the original audition tapes of the two star kids back in 1999 before the first Spy Kids movie. Just a little thing to watch for, assuming you feeljustified in spending moneyonthisin the firstplace. my opinion was mixed at best before that last 15 minutes.
