Star Trek Insurection

The ninth Trek installment, it's not bad but passable fare at best. Actually it seemed more like an episode out of the series than a full-fledged movie, it was missing that extra something special that past Trek movies have had.

It did have some good special effects in the form of some of the space ship shots, but some points of the plot were a bit weak. A planet where people don't age is the controversy of this film, a special kind of radiation comming from some encircling rings being the source of the immortality, with everyone trying to get sole posession of the planet.

Here's the problem: Federation technology has proven in the past that they could analyze this raditation inside of a couple of minutes, and have it duplicated within the hour. That done, instant immortality is the result, end of problem, end of movie. But, as usual, the logic of technological capability only succeeds when it's right for the plot.

Poor premise aside, there are some good things about this film. First it has the usual amount of casual one-liner humor and inter-character interaction, and the final confrontation between Picard and the bad guy, and it does have some rather enjoyable moments, space battle, all the usual fare.

But all in all, I found it to be rather lack-luster in comparison to "Star Trek First Contact" or most of the previous Trek movies with Kirk and the gang. Not so much a motion picture as an extra long episode from the series.

Good for a matinee, but not much else.
