The Wild Wild West

Well, it ain't all that wild but it does take place in the west so I guess 2 out of 3 isn't too bad. First let me say that if your a purest and a fan of the original show then prepared to be extremely disappointed. Doctor Lovelass is not the loveable short guy we expect but a normal guy missing half of himself- I'm guessing that short people are not politicially correct in Hollywood today. Though, they narrowly squeeze by this last point by calling him Arlis Lovelass instead of Micheleeto Lovelass. A minor point.

I'll bypass the whole thing of a former slave being such a high ranking government guy just 5 years after the Civil War ended, and go straight to the other problems. Kevin Kline as Artemis Gordon just does not work. Furthermore there is no chemistry between Gordon and West- in fact they hated each other for the first half of the film. Their chemistry was part of what made the series and what dumped this movie.

Some of the gadgets were typical of the series, and while the giant mechanized spider was very entertaining, it was more Jules Verne than Wild Wild West. Though it was perhaps a tad more believable than the good Doctor himself- missing legs, intestine, a lung, a spleen, his hips, and basically everything below his navel, and yet still alive with no visible signs of life support- a feat more than astounding for the late 1800s.

In short, aside from being an excuse for another Will Smith video, there's not much here to keep one coming back for more. In fact, I seem to remember a TV movie reunion show from the late 70s and early 80s that was a lot more fun and entertaining. This new film will entertain you for about a couple of hours, but two minutes after leaving the theater it's like Chinese food. Quickly forgotten.
