X-Men: The Last Stand

The third, and rumored to be last, in the X-Men series of movies, this one crossing a mutant cure with a shade of the old Dark Phoenix epic. Now first let me say that they have a different origin for the Phoenix here and quite a bit of the Dark Phoenix thing as given in comics and animation is left out but that would be for one obviously practical reason: having everything from that saga (with aliens and all) would have this film lasting about a full day and a half. So let me just talk about how their given version holds up on its own in the context of this film... Not bad. perhaps the dark phoenix version of the character is a bit underused but when she finally lets used it's best summed up by what Magneto himself says: "My God, what have I done."

There are some good moments, some very good presences (Magento, Prof. X), a couple of under-used characters, some minor characters getting more air-time this time out, in short a little bit of everything on both sides of the spectrum. In all though it is a pretty enjoyable movie as long as you don't go in with the Comic Book Guy attitude; they can't fit 19 hours of plot into a little over 2. This is one of those summer movies to see.

Something to watch for. Stay until past the very end of the credits for that one last scene. Even just when you think the last of the credits have all rolled, when the theater is about to raise up the lights, there is a last short scene that, while not entirely surprising for the observant, is still interesting.
